Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
The Internet is no longer a free expo. These days search engines charge for the privilege of being at the top of the first page of their results. Internet Marketing is the advertiser’s response to the opportunity this offers.
There are many avenues open for exploitation; two of the most prosperous are Search Engine Marketing and Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising.
Search Engine Marketing involves buying advertising space at likely to be found by surfers looking for a particular product. This space could be used for shotgun approaches such as banner ads, as well as for more focused contextual advertisements on particular results pages.
Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising is a more focused approach that involves payment only when a particular link is clicked to a particular website. For example, a search engine may charge an agreed amount (cost per click) every time a contextual advertisement is clicked on a search engine results page.
